ABSTRACT

Social media has revolutionised human interaction globally especially on the informal front. This paper proposes that the social media facility could be ‘tamed' to help bridge the educational divide that is apparent especially in developing countries such as Zimbabwe and that was magnified by the Covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic split education provision along income lines with those from the higher income bracket accessing educational instruction virtually even during such an ‘emergency' while those from the low income group were literally on sabbatical, virtually excluded. The obtaining scenario threatens realisation of Sustainable Development Goal Number 4 by 2030 as planned by the United Nations. The particular goal is aimed at ensuring "inclusive and equitable quality education and promote life-long learning opportunities for all”. In some instances, some candidates get to the examination room so inadequately prepared that the situation can be described as de facto exclusion. In order to assist Covid-19 pandemic affected learners and to uplift education quality in low income communities, this paper recommends the provision of a tablet per class/grade that should be viewed as a learning/teaching tool. The class teacher can use the tablet to download material, show educational videos to the class, audio/video record learners for educational ends, receive educational materials from the Ministry and its partners and avail these in an interesting multimodal manner to the learners.

ABSTRACT

The main objective of this study is to analyze the effect of institutional quality on education quality in developing countries. The literature review explores the channels through which institutional quality transits to affect education quality. The empirical analyses cover a sample of 82 developing countries. The main results obtained using ordinary least squares and two-stage least squares estimators show that institutional quality has a positive effect on student achievement and school completion, and a negative effect on educational failure. Concerning the role of transmission channels, the results show that a deterioration in institutional quality, characterized in particular by the presence of corruption, political instability, or the deterioration of government effectiveness, reduces the effectiveness of public spending on education and the quality of teaching through unethical behavior of teachers and the recruitment of untrained or less trained persons to carry out teaching tasks.

ABSTRACT

Technological developments increasingly support the design and implementation of more interactive learning media in the field of education, one of which is the use of augmented reality (AR) technology. The conditions and situation of the Covid-19 pandemic are also increasingly making education digital and online. The more various kinds of applications are developed, the more they must evaluate the user experience of the appearance and function of the application. Measurement of user experience in applications can use the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) tool, with 26 questionnaire points. The UEQ Quality results show that the Attractiveness scale is 2.04, the Pragmatic Quality scale is 1.68, and the Hedonic Quality scale is 1.17 which shows positive evaluation results, which means that it can be concluded that users tend to like the application in terms of user experience. Based on this data, users have used similar applications, and the updates are still lacking. The scales that show well are attractiveness, perspicuity, efficiency, and stimulation. From the results of the respondent's data processing, it was concluded that the convenience of using the application was good enough from the user's perception. The data also showed that the user enjoyed the application. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the educational context. University students were exposed to an educational transition from a face-to-face context to emergency remote teaching (ERT). This change affected the educational experience of students and teachers in general, and impacted their educational performance, as well as their emotional and mental health, among other aspects. However, learning from the successes during the ERT and reflecting on good and bad practices will allow us to configure effective learning scenarios that respond to the new normal. The objective of this paper is to describe and present the lessons learned during ERT from the experience of university students in Latin America who have already returned to face-to-face instruction. The study used a qualitative inductive approach and a phenomenographic design. The sample consisted of 640 undergraduate students (63% women) of higher education who experienced online education during the year 2021 and a face-to-face modality during the first semester of 2022, belonging to universities in Chile, Venezuela, and Ecuador. The results suggest that new learning scenarios should consider specific pedagogical practices, including active, collaborative, meaningful, and problem-based strategies, together with a diversity of feedback practices. It is concluded that the ERT brought good practices that should guide university educational policies. © 2023 by the authors.

ABSTRACT

The global pandemic has highlighted the importance of telehealth to access behavioral interventions. Face‐to‐face parent training improves the development and behaviors of young children at risk for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We evaluated a telehealth parent training intervention for a child at risk for ASD. Two parents identified possible early ASD symptoms in their 30‐month‐old son (lack of imitation, pointing, and vocal manding). Both parents simultaneously received telehealth behavioral skills training on the Parent Intervention for Children at Risk for Autism program for 1 hour per week over 29 weeks. Multiple baseline designs across parent and child behaviors showed that both parents improved their parent teaching fidelity above 80% and the child improved on all trained behaviors. This study expands the utility of telehealth behavioral parent training to young children at risk for ASD to mitigate early symptoms of ASD. ABSTRACT

When covid-19 attacked the world, all activities in the economic, social, cultural, and educational fields which were initially carried out onsite, were all done online, especially education at Telkom University which mostly uses website-based applications such as LMS, Igracias, SiRAMA as learning media center. So, the possibility of problems with the website is very large. To overcome this, students can issue a ticketing to ask for assistance from IT support at Telkom University, namely the Information Technology Services. Therefore, the role of the Information Technology Services in online education is very important, because the service is directly dealing with problems that occur in every student of Telkom University. In this research, the author proposes a prediction system for the quality of service of the Information Technology Services to predict whether the services of the Information Technology Services have been maximized and have greatly helped Telkom University students. The author uses the Generalized Additive Model for regression algorithm to estimate the quality of the Information Technology Servicesector's service which is selected due to its flexibility. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Covid-19 meant a huge challenge for everybody in the world. From one day to the other home-office became widespread in a lot of professions. Education was one of the areas where we faced a lot of troubles. In 2020 spring semester we had to quickly transform all classical university courses to online ones without having appropriate knowledge about distance teaching methods and applications. During the semesters under emergency situation, we had to learn a lot to enhance our education quality. Students used to these comfortable and modern possibilities and now, we are back in school, and we face a new problem. Is it possible to go back and continue education the same way as we did before Covid-19-can we step in the same river twice? We made a survey just after the starting of distance education and after the first semester back to classical face-to-face teaching to collect the opinions of students. In this paper we should like to present the experienced change in students' attitude which we should adopt into our work. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Higher education institutions had to adapt to a new normal quickly brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic. This research set out to explore the factors impacting the adoption of online learning by students and the implications of these factors on future learning. An online survey was conducted and analysed using quantitative and qualitative methods, guided by an extended technology acceptance model. The research was necessary as online learning is anticipated to continue to be used for education by higher education institutions. The findings showed the benefits of learning flexibility of online learning. However, social isolation resulted in low motivation and perception of lowering the quality of education. The research concludes that students need reassurance that they are getting an adequate education through structured learning materials and processes with timely lecturer support. Students need access to peers and must be encouraged to engage. Furthermore, students need to find their optimal learning spaces because, as life-long learners, they need to teach themselves effectively. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

The education sector was considerably affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, risking the learning process and forcing governments to pull out contingency actions to ensure the students' development of generic and specific skills and guarantee education quality. These actions include the shift to online and hybrid (i.e., online and in-person) classes. This work assesses the pandemic effect on the generic skills of undergraduate students in a Colombian university. The study aims to determine the effect of COVID- 19 on the development of generic skills quantitatively. Two datasets were retrieved: i) A dataset with the scores obtained by the students in an institutional Generic Skills test and in the midterm tests; ii) A dataset with the students' scores in the Colombian standardized test for undergraduate students, called the Saber Pro test. Three analysis stages were performed: i) Univariate exploratory analysis; ii) Differential analysis to compare the No COVID vs. COVID scenarios; iii) A correlation analysis. Results showed that the scores of the Generic Skills and the Midterm tests increased significantly when comparing the two scenarios, except for the Written Communication. As for the Saber Pro test, only the scores for Written Comprehension, Quantitative Reasoning, and the global scores increased significantly. On the other hand, the correlation analysis showed a strong correlation only between the scores obtained at the Generic Skills and the Saber Pro tests for the English Proficiency skill. In addition, the analysis elucidated a weak correlation between the Generic Skills test's average and the Saber Pro's global score. Finally, the results prove that online education is a feasible alternative that offers students more flexibility to ensure the development of generic and specific skills.

ABSTRACT

After more than 2 years of the pandemic caused by COVID-19, a gradual return to face-to-face teaching has been taking place. Therefore, administrators need to establish procedures to facilitate and ensure the quality of teaching during this process. The purpose of this article is to describe the strengths and challenges of implementing Blended Learning (BL). The design used is consistent with a secondary investigation of a narrative review. As a result, several recommendations are presented for building institutional frameworks that enable the implementation of high-quality BL models in the context of a gradual return to face-to-face courses in higher education. From a theoretical and contextual perspective, considerations for transitioning to this model are discussed, based on lessons learned from emergency remote education. We conclude that the present post-pandemic scenario constitutes a pivotal moment for determining the way education is delivered in higher education.

ABSTRACT

The primary goal of this work was to establish the influence of the epidemic on education, especially the impact of online platforms on students' overall performance. To improve education quality in this new normal, it is vital to ascertain the elements influencing students' performance. During the Covid-19 epidemic, online-based learning (e-learning) activities increased significantly as every educational institution shifted its operations to digital means. To improve education quality in this circumstance, it is vital to ascertain the elements that influence students' performance. Data mining techniques are becoming more used in educational field research. Educational data mining is a new area that tries to study the unique, ever more extensive data sets generated by educational settings to better understand the students who use them. In this study, Iterative Dichotomiser 3 was implemented to explore precisely 280 students' data to evaluate its performance on an online learning platform. 10-fold cross-validation and the percentage split method were used to assess the classifier. In this analysis, the 10-fold cross-validation method outperformed the percentage split by almost 3 percent, where this validation method achieved almost 77.86 percent accuracy. The effectiveness of the ID3 classifier in predicting students' performance on an online platform will be investigated in this research. © 2022 IEEE.
